How do Māori celebrate Matariki?

It is a tradition to celebrate Matariki for the Māori.

Some people celebrate Matariki by having a feast, eating taro, and lighting a bonfire on the beach. They can have mussels and kumara and ika.

On Matariki people spend time with thier family and do arts, knitting, making kites, playing board games, carving, singing and painting.

On Matariki if the stars are bright, that means your crops are going to grow faster than normal.

The main idea is that is they celebrate with a lot of stuff like the haka, dancing, weaving, carving, string games and kite making.

The Matariki stars are also called the seven sisters. The seven sisters have names as well like: Waiti,Waita,Tupu-a-rangi,Tupu-a-nuku,Waipuna-a-rangi,Ururangi and Matariki.

The stars in Matariki were formed around 100 million years ago. That’s only 1/50th the age of our sun. Traditionally, Māori believed that the brighter the stars were, the warmer the coming season would be for growing crops. 

Matariki is a Māori new year celebration where family’s come together to spend time together.

The stars of Matariki were formed around 100 million years ago. That’s only 1/5^th the age of our sun. 

During Matariki, people spend time with whanau and have one big feast. The whanau might talk about Matariki or sing one or more Maori songs. 

The Maori might go fishing and eat lots of seafoods like mussels and maybe kumara and a BBQ. 

When it’s Matariki Maori people make art and crafts like drawing, Maori tattoo patterns, or craft some colourful kites. They can weave flax into stars or make poi. 

Matariki is a special time for the whanau to spend time together.

Matariki is from the constellation of Taurus. Maori usually celebrate Matariki in June or July. Matariki is the Māori new year.

Matariki is all about the seven sisters. It is a traditional celebration of telling myths and histories. Maori come together as a whanau and put a hangi in the ground. They have a feast to celebrate.

Some families believe Matariki is the mother of the six stars surrounding her. The stars names are Waiti, Waita Tupu-a-rangi, Tupu-a-nuku, Waipuna –a-rangi and Urua-rangi. The seven brightest stars are also called the seven sisters.

Maori celebrate Matariki this year on the 25^th of June. They  have a feast and have a BBQ and eat kaimoana.

You can have a feast and dance and remember all the people who passed away in your family.

The myths behind Matariki say it is made up of seven stars. Their names are Waiti, Waita, Waipuna-a-rangi, Tupu-a-nuku, Tupu-a-rangi, Ururangi and Matariki. Those seven stars are bright stars which come out in June.

Many years earlier, the seven stars were one big star. But one day they broke into seven little pieces. This left one of the stars as the mother star and her name was Matariki.

Matariki is when you can make new friends and spend time with your family.

The seven stars are also called seven sisters. Matariki is a happy day where Maori people celebrate the Matariki festival with their friends and family.

How do Maori celebrate Matariki?

Matariki is really important because it's the Maori New Year. It is a Maori tradition to have a feast, spend time with whanau, and do arts and craft.

There are even myths and some history about Matariki. Matariki is named after the seven stars also known as the seven sisters. People also believe that Matariki is the mother of the other six stars.

The best thing to do during Matariki is to spend time with whanau and have delicious kai. This includes kaimoana or kumara. Also you can have a hangi, and for your Nan or your family you can get mussels.

When it’s Matariki, people celebrate by doing arts and crafts or dancing like haka. They can make nga whetu out of harakeke or they can make tauria with wood and do whakaira and make a ahimumura.

They go to the tatahi and have a good time and perhaps people can have a BBQ. You can sing with your whaea me te papa and your tuakana teina or your younger siblings. You can have a feed and remember your lost ones and invite some people that you know. They can bring kumara you can even do a haka with taiaha and go back  home and start planting your crops.

How do the Maori celebrate Matariki?

Matariki is a special tradition. It’s the Maori New Year when the stars of Matariki come out. They believe the brighter the stars are, the more the crops will grow.

People believe that the Sky father Ragninui was so angry when he was separated from the Earth mother Papatuanuku that he threw bits of his two eyes into the heavens. These bits became the stars of Matariki. Of course, this is just one of the Matariki myths.

There are lots of things to do during Matariki. But the main thing people do, is spend time with whanau (family.) People usually have some quality family time having a nice big feast. To have even more family time the night before the feast people usually invite all of their family to have a family reunion.

During Matariki people usually have a celebration including lots of dancing and singing. (including the kids.) Celebrations include using Poi’s and big manly Haka. To celebrate Matariki people also go out on  the streets at night playing music and dancing to the rhythm.
