Matariki is
from the constellation of Taurus. Maori
usually celebrate Matariki in June or July. Matariki is the Māori new year.
Matariki is
all about the seven sisters. It is a traditional celebration of telling myths and
histories. Maori come
together as a whanau and put a hangi in the ground. They have a feast to celebrate.
Some families believe Matariki is the mother of the six stars surrounding her. The stars names are Waiti, Waita Tupu-a-rangi, Tupu-a-nuku, Waipuna –a-rangi and Urua-rangi. The seven brightest stars are also called the seven sisters.
Maori celebrate Matariki this year on the 25th of June. They have a feast and have a BBQ and eat kaimoana.
