How do Maori
celebrate Matariki?
Matariki is
a time to have a feast with whanau and friends. Maori people celebrate by
singing and dancing. They welcome the stars back into the sky. They sing a
prayer for the stars and have some kai (food).
People do karakias and hakas for the stars to remember people who have
passed, they do prayers for the ones that have died. People also celebrate by
eating kaimoana and kumara, they do feasts and craft some stars, kites, and
patterns. The Matariki stars start the Maori new year and they all shine bright.
If they do, it is good for growing crops and planting some seeds.
