How do Maori celebrate Matariki? - Makoe

How do Maori celebrate Matariki?

Maori celebrate Matariki because it is a Maori tradition.  Matariki celebrates the Maori New Year. The old legend of Matariki is a myth. Matariki is celebrated on June. They are the brightest stars but long ago Matariki was one big star then it broke into little pieces.

During Matariki people gather family and they sing, dance and have a feast. Some people go on the beach to celebrate Matariki and they set a fire and have a feast. They eat kaimoana, pig, kumara and celebrate.

When it’s matariki people talk about memories, family they have lost and people that have died.

Matariki is celebrated by Maori. During Matariki people talk about memories of those they have lost.

  2. Thank you Makoe for sharing. Matariki is a very important time for maori. It a time to connect with those who have gone before us, look ahead to the future and be thankful for the gifts that land sea and air provides. A very special time.
