What is Matariki?
Matariki is the Māori name for the cluster of stars also known as the Pleiades. It rises in mid-winter and for many Māori, it heralds the start of a new year. Matariki literally means the 'eyes of god' (Matariki) or 'little eyes'.
Matariki is a Māori New Year tradition that represents the Maori new year. The myth and history of Matariki states that there are seven sisters. The seven stars come out in June every year on Matariki. Whanau see the stars and share history. They also spend time with each other by feasting. They eat Kumara and Hangi, kaimoana and barbecue. They like to sing, dance and do the Haka. They like to carve wood.
Matariki is a Maori new year celebration.
